How is Whey Protein Made?
Whey protein is made as a by-product of cheese. It’s a fairly complex process but here’s the simplest explanation you’ll find on the internet!
It all begins with milk. When an enzyme is added, the milk separates into two parts; curds, and a yellow liquid.
The curds are used to make cheese, while the yellow liquid is called liquid whey.
At this point, this liquid whey still contains a bunch of carbs, fats, and other minerals that aren’t ideal to have in your protein powder. To get rid of these, the liquid whey is filtered, much like how you would filter chai to remove tea grounds.
In this case, the tea grounds are the unwanted impurities that we want to remove leaving behind a liquid with a high concentration of protein.
